Four Little Foxes
Speak gently,Spring,and make no sudden sound;
For in my windy valley, yesterday I found
New-born foxes squirming on the ground-
Speak gently,
Walk softly,March,forbear the bitter blow;
Her feet within a trap, her blood upon the snow,
The four little foxes saw their mother go-
Walk softly.
Go lightly,Spring,oh,give them no alarm;
When I coverd them with boughs to shelter them
from harm, the thin blue foxes suckled at my arm-
Go lightly
Step softly,March,with your rampant hurricane;
Nuzzling one another, and whimpering with pain,
The new little foxes are shivering in the rain-
Step softly

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN WHO LIVED IN A SHOE
There was an old woman who lived in a shoe,
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do
She gave them broth, without any bread,
And whipped them all soundly, and sent them to bed.

That May morning very early,
As I walked the city street,
Not a single store was open,
Any customer to greet,
That May morning it was early,
As I walked the Avenue,
I could stop and stare and window shop,
And hear the pigeons coo,
Early,Early,that May morning,
I could skip and jump and run,
And make shadows on the sidewalk,
Not disturbing anyone,
All the windows,All the lampposts,
Every leave on every tree,
That was growing through the sidewalk,
Seemed to be there,
Just for me.

THE RIDDLE SONG
I gave my love a cherry,
That had no stone.
I gave my love a chicken,
That had no bone.
I gave my love a baby,
with no cryin',
And told my love a story,
That had no end.

How can there be a cherry
That has no stone?
How can there be a chicken,
That has no bone?
How can there be a baby with no cryin?
How can you tell a story that has no end?

A cherry when its bloomin',
It has no stone.
A chicken when its pippin',
There is no bone.
A little baby sleepin
Has no cryin',
And when I say "I love you",
It has no end.

HOME ON THE RANGE
Oh,give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Home,home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

John Riley
Was a maid in a garden,
Strange young man came riding by,
Said,"Fair maid will you marry me?"
This,then,sir,was her reply.

"Oh,no,kind sir,I cannot marry thee,
For I've a love who sails along the sea.
He's been gone for seven years,
Still he will return to me".

"What if he's in some battle slain,
Or drowned in the deep salt sea?
Or if he's found another love,
He and his love both married be?"

"If he's in some battle slain,
Then I shall die when the moon doth wane.
And if he's drowned in the deep salt sea,
I am true to his memory.

"And if he's found another love,
He and his love both married be,
I wish them health and happiness
Where they live across the sea."

Well,he picked her up in his arms so strong,
And kisses gave her-one,two,three,
Saying,"Come,my love,come with me,
I am your long lost John Riley.
Come my love,come to me,
I'm your long-lost John Riley.

HUMPTY DUMPTY
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the King's horses and
All the king's men
Could'nt put Humpty together again.

TELL ME WHY
Tell me why the stars do shine.
Tell me why the Ivy twines.
Tell me why the sky's so blue.
And I will tell you just why I love you.

Because God made the stars to shine,
Because God made the Ivy twine
Because God made the sky so blue,
Because God made you, that's why I love you.

HUSH LITTLE BABY
Hush,little baby,dont say a word.
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
If that mockingbird don't sing,
Papa's gona buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring is brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass,
If that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat.
If that bully goat don't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turn over,
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
If that dog named Rover don't bark,
Papa's gonna buy you a horse & cart
If that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest baby in town.

FROGGY WENT A-COURTIN
Froggy went a-courtin";he did ride,
A sword and pistol by his side.
He rode right up to Miss Mousie's door,
And he hit it so hard he made it roar.
Then Miss Mousie let him in,
And that's when the courtin did begin.
He took Miss Mousie right on his knee,
And says,"Miss Mousie will you marry me?"
Well,Miss Mousie says,"I don't know about that,"
I think I'm sold, you'll have to ask Uncle Rat,"
Well, what did he get for a wedding gown,?
A piece of the hide of an old white hound.
Well, where will the weddin' super be,?
Way over yonder in the hollow tree,
Well, the first guest was a big June bug,
And he danced all around with a half-a-pint jug,
The second guest was a bumble bee,
And he danced all around, with a fiddle on his knee,
Well, the third guest was a little gray mouse,
He says,"Mister Froggy can I rent you a house,?
Mister Froggy went a-travelin across the lake:
He got swallowed up by a big black snake,
Well, that was the end of him and her,
I guess there won't be tadpoles coverd with fur!

WOODMAN,SPARE THAT TREE
Woodman,spare that tree!
Touch not a sigle bough!
In youth it shelterd me,
And I'll protect it now.
`Twa my forefather's hand
That placed it near his cot"
There,woodman,let it stand
Thy ax shall harm it not!
That old familiar tree,
Whose glory and renown
Are spread o"er land and sea,
And wouldst thou hew it down?
Woodman,forbear thy stroke!
Cut not its' earthbound ties!
Oh!spare that aged oak,
Now towering to the skies.
When an idle boy
I sought its grateful shade;
In all their gushing joy
Here too my sisters played.
My mother kissed me here
My father pressed my hand-
Forgive this foolish tear,
But let that old oak stand!
My heart -strings round the cling,
Close as thy bark,old friend!
Here shall the wild bird sing,
And still thy branches bend.
Old tree,the storm still brave!
And,woodman,leave the spot!
While I've a hand to save,
Thy ax shall harm it not.
GEORGE POPE MORRIS(1802-1864)

RED RIVER VALLEY
From this valley they say you are going,
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile,
For they say you are taking the sunshine,
That brightens our pathway awhile.
Come and sit by my side if you love me,
Do not hasten to bid me adieu;
But remember the Red River Valley
And the girl that has loved you so true.

PAT-A-CAKE,PAT-A-CAKE
Pat-a-cake,Pat-a-cake,baker's man!
Bake me a cake as fast as you can;
Pat it and prick it and mark it with "B"
Put it in the oven for Baby and me.

ON TOP OF OLD SMOKY
On top of old Smoky,
All coverd with snow,
I lost my true lover,
A-courtin' too slow.
A-courtin's a pleasure,
A flirtins' a grief,
A false-hearted lover,
Is worse than a thief.

EENCY,WEENCY SPIDER The Eency,Weency Spider went up the water spout;
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain.
And the Eency,Weency Spider went up the water spout again.

I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE RAILROAD
I've been working on the railroad,
All the live-long day.
I've been working on the railroad,
Just to pass the time away.
Can't you hear the whistle blowin?
Rise up so early in the morn.
Can't you hear the captain shoutin,
"Dinah blow your hor"!
Dinah wont you blow,
Dinah wont you blow,
Dinah won't you blow your horn?
Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah,
Someone's in the kitchen I know,
Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah,
Strummin on the old Banjo and singin
Fe fi fiddly eye oh.
Fe fi fiddly eye oh.
Fe fi fiddly eye oh.
Strummin on the old Banjo!

MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB
Mary had a little lamb,
It's fleece was white as snow,
It followed her to school one day,
Which was against the rule.
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.
And so the teacher turned it out,
But still it lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.
Why does the lamb love Mary so?
The eager children cry;
Why,Mary loves the lamb,you know,
the teacher did reply.

Not every truth is the better for showing its face undisguised; and often silence is the wisest thing for a man to heed.~ Pindar
